Department of Psychology, University of
Lucknow, organized a declamation competition on 16th Jan 2021 with the title
‘Let the Pink Pose Bud Blossom’. This competition was the part of Mission
Shakti programme series in which different departments of the university are
organizing different activities to promote women empowerment and to spread
awareness about issues related to gender-based discrimination. The topic for
the declamation competition was ‘female foeticide’. The participants elaborated
upon several dimensions of this social evil and ways to eradicate it. Prof.
Sheela Mishra, Mission Shakti Co-ordinator of university’s mission shakti
program, was also present during this occasion. Head of the Department of
Psychology, Prof. Madhurima Pradhan, said: “such competition encourages
students to look around and think about the problem while they scribble their
speeches, and this what we want that they look at the problem and recognise
it.”
On
17th Jan 2021, the department of psychology organised an online panel
discussion on ‘Fighting Female Foeticide: issues and challenges.’ Dr Nutan
Vohra, who is former principal and head of the department of psychology,
A.N.D.N.N.M.M.C.S.J.M., University of Kanpur, who was one of the panellists,
said: “Youth can bring the change and psychologists can play an important
role.” Ms Aarti Kumar, Director, Community empowerment lab, said: “Female
foeticide is an outcome of a deeper problem prevalent in the society and we
need to work on that problem.” Sunita Aron, Sr. Editor of Hindustantimes, was
also one of the panellists. She said: “All organizations should come together
and work for it. Power of mother needs to be evoked and they should unite to
pressurize the political parties. Role of religious leaders is also very
important; they can call female foeticide a sin.” Prof. Sheela Mishra, Mission Shakti
Co-ordinator of university’s mission shakti program, said: “Such issues affect
the role of women to transmit the culture. If women are weak, the coming
generation will be weak.” Head of the Department of Psychology, Prof. Madhurima
Pradhan, said: “Both male and female needs to work together to solve this
problem. All segments of society need to come together to fight this sin.” Dr
Manini Srivastava, Assistant Professor, Department of psychology, was the
organising secretary for this two-day event of the department.
